Human Resources Case Study: Designing a performance management system for a growing technology start up

Designing a performance management system for a growing technology start up
Context Our Work
· A fast-paced technology start up with a presence in India and primarily serving US clients faced a challenge of retaining high performing talent and felt that a lot of management time was spent in re-hiring. This impacted their ability to expand into new markets and impacted the morale of the organization · We conducted a series of discussions with their management and key performers to understand how goals were set, cascaded, monitored and ultimately evaluated. A detailed discussion on their business goals and the impact of those goals on their workforce plans followed

· Finally, we asked them if they knew where they were losing their talent and why. Our recommendation included a balanced score card with clearly defined goals and performance indicators as well as an organization structure that would support fulfillment of company goals

· A quarterly, goal based evaluation system with 2-way feed forward system was put in place with a focus on fulfillment and positive reinforcement as opposed to negative feedback and deterrents

· Finally, a series of communication workshops ensured that everyone in the company saw this as fair and transparent and more aligned than the previous top down approach

Results:· Our aligned goal setting and evaluation process led to the client being able to triple their workforce and expanding their footprint while retaining key talent
